The client
A Tier-1 telecom operator in Europe aiming to take full control of energy efficiency initiatives by internalizing power-saving operations across a multi-vendor RAN environment—eliminating vendor lock-in and maximizing both performance and cost savings.
The challenge
The operator had implemented Power Saving Features (PSFs) from multiple RAN vendors. One vendor operated its PSF under a Managed Services model based on a benefit-sharing agreement, where energy savings were shared between the vendor and the operator. The operator’s goal was to internalize the process and scale it nationwide across a multi-vendor environment, gaining full control over both performance and cost.
- Black-Box Operations: Power savings were managed externally, with no visibility or control over how energy-saving actions impacted network performance or customer experience.
- Vendor Lock-In: The solution was limited to a single vendor, preventing scalability across the full network infrastructure.
- Cost Inefficiency: The benefit-sharing model reduced the overall financial benefit by requiring the operator to share energy savings with the vendor.
- Quality Risks: Lack of transparency made it impossible to evaluate or mitigate quality degradation caused by energy-saving actions.
- Resource Constraints: The internal engineering team lacked the capacity to manage power savings manually, due to high operational workload.
